Cosmetics Packaging Materials - Plastic Bottles Edition

Cosmetic packaging materials, especially those for skin care, are mainly divided into two categories: glass and plastic. Now, let's make a brief summary of the knowledge about plastic packaging materials.

I. Different plastic materials

One of the commonly used packaging materials for cosmetics is plastic packaging materials, which include: PP, PE, PS, PET, PETG, AS, ABS, acrylic, etc.

PP material is the polymer polypropylene, while plastic is a high-molecular compound. It is non-toxic, harmless, odorless, has good heat resistance and cold resistance, and excellent chemical stability. Its chemical properties are not easily changed when exposed to strong acids or strong alkalis.

PE: Polyethylene. The material is basically opaque, a bit softer and not as smooth as PET.

PET is polyethylene terephthalate, a thermoplastic polyester. Its surface is relatively smooth and lustrous, resistant to friction, and has good dimensional stability and high hardness. However, it is not resistant to hot water immersion or alkali. The material is an environmentally friendly one, featuring high barrier properties, light weight, non-breakability, chemical resistance, and extremely high transparency. It can be made into pearlescent, colored, magnetic white, and transparent colors, and is widely used in filling gel water.

PETG has better light transmittance than PET, but it is not commonly used in China. It is costly, has a high waste rate, can be formed in one go, and is not recyclable. PETG is used in various long-lasting daily necessities, such as cosmetic bottles, perfume bottles, and medicine packaging containers, etc. Compared with PET, PETG has higher transparency, better chemical resistance, superior oil resistance and better weather resistance (yellowing). The procurement cost of PETG is 2 to 3 times that of PET.
